XBLA's Review-Based Delisting? The Developer Perspective
>> From gamasutra.com:
Following Microsoft's announcement that it would be delisting Xbox Live Arcade games with a MetaCritic score lower than 65%, if other conversion rate and age criteria were met, newly launched Gamasutra sister site Gamerbytes asked XBLA developers exactly what they thought.
Both Mare Sheppard and Raigan Burns, the two members of N+ developer Metanet Software, were more outwardly frustrated by the announcement.
Mare Sheppard: "Wow, that seems so extreme! It seems very unfair that the offending titles would be pulled entirely, regardless of their sales. Sure, they may be rated/reviewed poorly, but isn't that, realistically, entirely subjective? And, a conversion rate of 6% is still admirable, isn't it?"
Raigan Burns: "It really doesn't make any sense that they wouldn't just bump them to a lower-profile category... deleting them outright is INSANE. Amazon stocks books with single-digit annual sales, and they have to deal with physical inventory! You'd think digital would be even cheaper to manage. We both believe that a rating system would be a better solution to this problem. The system implemented on the Wii is working very well, for example, especially since it requires players to have played the game for a certain amount of time before they get to rate it. It's fair, and such an important feature. Cutting down the catalog is not an effective way to manage complexity; user ratings are."
Bach: There are 'cautionary tales' to learn from the PSP
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
"The PSP is a reasonably successful product at the profit-and-loss level. But as a product concept, there are cautionary tales to learn from it," said Bach, speaking to Dean Takahashi at Venture Beat. "While it is good at producing audio, it's not a good music player because it doesn't have local storage (except for flash memory slots). You can't keep your music there. It has a beautiful screen, but you can only get the video under the Universal Media Disc format. That format hasn't been successful. "On a game level, it has done well. But even there, it is mostly PlayStation 2 ports. There isn't much original content," he added.
Bach said that Microsoft's philosophy with its Zune handheld will be to take things slowly, to focus on individual elements over time instead of trying to offer everything - such as music, games and video - out of the box.
Possible Opus Motherboard Xbox 360 Spotted?
>> From 8bitjoystick.com:
I've gotten word from Xbox Live user xD157UR83Dx who think that he has an Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 on his hand. His Xenon motherboard based Xbox 360 gave him the Red Ring of Death Core Digital error and died on him about two weeks ago. So he shipped it off and a week later he got a newer Xbox 360 with a manufacturing date of "2006-2009" (that is what he said the labels said, he might send us a photo). His new post RnR Xbox 360 had a much quieter DVD drive and a much cooler and quieter fan. I can't verify since I have not seen it with my own eyes and Opus systems can be tricky to identify but there is a pretty good possibility that he has a genuine Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 on his hands. W00t!
The Opus motherboard is a newer Falcon generation Xbox 360 with a 90 nm GPU but a newer cooler 65 nm CPU and a re-designed cooling system. This going to help Microsoft make working playable Xbox system out of all the dead RRODed Xenons that they have at their RnR repair and refurbish facilities. Up until now if you had a dead Xenon based Xbox 360 you would get a re-jiggered resurrected Xenon motherboard back that might still have lingering damage from the death and resurrection process. On Opus motherboard based Xbox 360 is as good as a brand new Xbox 360 on the store shelves now but no HDMI port and you can only get one by having previously dead Xenon sent in.
Microsoft's Bach and the RROD
>> From next-gen.biz:
The "Red Ring of Death" proved to be a billion-dollar mistake for Microsoft, but Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Group boss Robbie Bach says defects have had little impact on Xbox 360's image with consumers.
"The amazing part of that whole situation is that when we look at brand preference, customer satisfaction, willingness to recommend, none of that data has moved through that whole process," Bach said. "The number-one complaint I get from people is that it is taking you too long to fix the console." Bach said that fans who have gone through two or three defective Xbox 360 consoles only to remain loyal to the brand are representative of the "power of the product offering and service we provide." Bach continued, "In the ordinary course of something like this, you would expect it to show up in the customer reaction data. We just haven't seen that.
Analyst: PS3 Will Continue to Outpace 360; Microsoft Price Cut at E3?
>> From gamedaily.com:
The PS3 beat the 360 in May and EEDAR's Jesse Divnich expects this pattern to continue, in part because of exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4. Divnich also believes a price cut on 360 may be announced at E3 next month.
Following the release of the impressive May video game sales data, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich has weighed in with a few comments. Perhaps his most interesting observation was in regards to the effect that exclusive PS3 titles have on hardware adoption - apparently, games exclusive to PS3 do a far better job of driving hardware sales than games exclusive to Xbox 360 or Wii.
Divnich also believes that Microsoft is preparing to make a price cut announcement on its hardware at the upcoming E3 summit in July: "With E3 around the corner, we can expect Microsoft to make some type of announcement regarding a hardware price cut, the introductory of a new hardware SKU with new features, or both. If there is a hardware price cut, it is not known if Sony will follow suit right way, but it would be safe to assume that Sony would execute some type of plan within a 2 month window of any hardware price cut from the Xbox 360." Microsoft's Take on the May NPD
>> From the Xbox PR Blog:
NPD has released its May retail sales data, and Xbox 360 continues to lead the current generation of gaming consoles. Highlights include:
"Grand Theft Auto IV" continues blistering pace on Xbox 360 platform, beating the other platform version by 2:1 * With 871,000 total unit sales in May, "Grand Theft Auto IV" on Xbox 360 outsold the other platform's version 2:1. (May NPD data)
Xbox 360 generates more dollars at retail for third party publishers * With $110 million in third party game sales in May, Xbox 360 continues to move more third party games than any other console. Lifetime-to-date Xbox 360 has generated $3.9 billion dollars at retail for third party publishers, or 59% of the total in this generation. (May NPD data) * 21 of the 25 top selling third party franchise titles with releases this generation, like "Grand Theft Auto IV," sell best on Xbox 360. Eighteen of those franchises were previous best-sellers, and two were exclusives, on the PlayStation 2. (May NPD data) * Only Xbox 360 is providing an improved software attach rate for third party games generation-over-generation. Xbox 360 continues to lead the industry with a record-breaking software attach rate of 7.7. (May NPD data)
Xbox 360 games outsell, outplay the competition * Xbox 360 games rank higher than the competition with 12 games with a Metacritic score of 90 or higher, more than PS3 and Wii combined. * Top-ranking games helped drive sales of 187,000 consoles in May contributing a global install base of more than 19 million. (May NPD data and Microsoft internal data) * Game sales contributed to $214 million in total consumer spending on the Xbox 360 platform in May. Lifetime-to-date spending on Xbox 360 tops $9.9 billion, or 51% of share. (May NPD data)
Among 10-26 year olds, Xbox 360 gets more playing time than the Wii and PS3 * As reported in Nielsen's Consumer Insight newsletter, a summary of Nielsen Games GamePlay Metrics service (which electronically tracks console usage) from April 2007 to February 2008 shows that among 10-26 year olds, Xbox 360 gets on average over twice the game play as the Wii with younger gamers, likely due to a record software attach and a blockbuster games library. The Xbox 360 gets roughly 75 hours of use per month. Wii users spent just 35 hours per month gaming during the same time period. * Xbox 360 gamers in this age range also play more than their counterparts on PS3, who spend about 53 hours per month gaming.
Xbox 360: E3 bound * Last month we showcased an all-star lineup of games including "Gears of War 2," "Fable 2," "Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts," "Viva Piņata 2," and "Too Human." We still have quite a few aces left up our sleeve; see you at E3 next month!
Shane Kim: Japan is a 'longer-term effort'
>> From gamesindustry.biz:
"We've been very realistic about our near-to-mid term opportunities in Japan, specifically with respect to the current console generation," Shane Kim said in an interview shortly before his promotion was announced. "Obviously it's a challenging market with well entrenched competitors.
"I'm excited to see developments such as the new RPGs from Japanese developers - I think that's a recognition in the developer-publisher community that the Xbox 360 is a great platform, and we've got a great installed base in the rest of the world.
"From a business perspective I think they all know that they need to take the platform seriously, and my hope is that through that process we'll start to see more Japanese content that will stimulate greater demand in Japan and start to turn our fortunes around.
New leadership roles for Shane Kim and Phil Spencer - Jeff Bell leaves
>> From the press release:
REDMOND, Wash., June 12 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced a new leadership structure in its Interactive Entertainment Business, assembled to align with future business development opportunities.
Shane Kim will assume the role of corporate vice president of Strategy and Business Development, a newly established role in Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. In addition, Phil Spencer, a Microsoft Game Studios veteran for six years, will assume leadership of all first-party development and publishing efforts worldwide. Both leaders will report directly to Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business.
After spending four and a half years leading the transformation of Microsoft Game Studios into a world-class entertainment publisher, Kim will now explore new growth opportunities with partners across all parts of the global Interactive Entertainment Business. His focus will be on future external relationships and partnerships, as well as developing growth strategies for the entire business.
Formerly the general manager of Microsoft Game Studios Europe, Spencer will return to Redmond from the U.K. to take on his new role as general manager of the global Microsoft Game Studios business. Spencer will oversee the creation of new, unannounced franchises that aim to attract new audiences. His teams will foster some of today's most beloved entertainment franchises, including "Halo," "Gears of War" and "Fable," by continuing to partner with the industry's best developers to deliver the best games for the Windows and Xbox platforms.
"We're strategically positioning the leadership team to drive every aspect of the Xbox business to new heights," Mattrick said. "I firmly believe that Microsoft will lead the next great innovations in games and entertainment. Today's organizational announcements align us to accelerate this expansive growth."
After two years of driving a cultural change in the way Microsoft markets its entertainment brands, Jeff Bell, current corporate vice president of Global Marketing for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, has decided to pursue other opportunities outside Microsoft. Bell will remain at Microsoft through the summer, working with Mattrick to ensure a smooth transition of his responsibilities. In the interim while Microsoft searches for Bell's replacement, Matt Barlow, Charlotte Stuyvenberg and Jim Merrick, all day-to-day product marketing and marketing communications leaders in the Interactive Entertainment Business, will carry forward global marketing initiatives for the business group.
"The time is right for me to pursue my life's passion of consumer brand marketing and the creative and services that drive it," Bell said. "Coming from automotive, and now technology and entertainment, I am excited to expand to new industries and categories."
"We thank Jeff for his achievements and contributions to Microsoft and the Xbox business. His innovative marketing programs included award-winning Xbox brand marketing campaigns, as well as world-renowned creative for 'Gears of War' and 'Halo 3,'" Mattrick said. "We wish Jeff nothing but the best in his future endeavors."
The ESA lobbied on First Amendment issues, measures to promote parental control technology, and on proposals intended to keep violent video games away from children. In addition, the group lobbied on measures to protect intellectual property, crack down on piracy, and on patent reform and trade issues, according to a disclosure report filed April 21 with the House clerk's office. MrModchips Wins Appeal in 1M GBP UK Modchip Case
>> From team-xecuter.com:
In a landmark historic occasion today 11 June 2008 at the court of appeal criminal division the legal argument that modchips do not circumvent copyright protection was upheld by Judge Justice Jacobs.
The granting of this appeal based on the argument that the copyright infringement has already taken place before the use of a modchip has resulted in the squashing of all 26 counts against MrModchips
The defendant MrModchips was awarded full costs as a result of his successful appeal and offered his most sincerest thanks to his legal team and his many well wishers who had supported his fight for justice in the face of what are now no more than corporate public bullies.
The normally very vocal Michael Rawlinson from ELSPA was strangely unavailable for comment today.
Mr Rawlinson was originally quoted as saying: "It marks a milestone in the fight against piracy."
What it does now is mark a milestone in the fight against overzealous independent agencies who have their strings pulled by corporations as opposed to the genuine concerns of the electorate.
What will these mean for modchips in the UK ?????? Truly a disaster for the likes of ELSPA and Trading Standards.
Gartner Chief Analyst about Last Year's Xbox 360 'Recall'
>> From eetimes.com:
When Microsoft Corp. announced a mammoth global recall of its Xbox 360 a year ago, the software giant never disclosed the exact source of the game console's heat problem that led to the fiasco.
Now, in an unlikely venue at Design Automation Conference here, Bryan Lewis, research vice president and chief analyst at Gartner, disclosed that the problem started in a graphic chip. Lewis offered this offhand revelation while discussing the changing ASIC and ASSP landscape for his DAC audience.
The Xbox 360 recall a year ago happened because "Microsoft wanted to avoid an ASIC vendor," said Lewis. Microsoft designed the graphic chip on its own, cut a traditional ASIC vendor out of the process and went straight to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., he explained.
But in the end, by going cheap--hoping to save tens of millions of dollars in ASIC design costs, Microsoft ended up paying more than $1 billion for its Xbox 360 recall.
To fix the problem, Microsoft went back to an unnamed ASIC vendor based in the United States and redesigned the chip, Lewis added. (Based on a previous report, the ASIC vendor is most likely the former ATI Technologies, now part of AMD.)
Robbie Bach Interview: No Zune Phone, No Blu-ray 360, Ads on 360, Xbox 720
>> From an interview with Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, on sfgate.com:
* Q: It sounds like you are also seeing advertising opportunities with the Xbox. How do you do that without alienating or aggravating your users? * A: Whether it's a phone or the Xbox or the PC, the ideal goal is to make the ad relevant in a part of the experience, as opposed to something that intrudes on the space. In the game space, one of the things we have found is making ads part of the game. If you're in the car racing game and you're driving around the city, product placement works. There are ads in a city. There are billboards in a city. We can place those and we can actually dynamically rotate ads to those locations. We've done some very successful campaigns with big, national brands like Nike, Doritos and Toyota that want to get their brand in front of a very desirable target audience. They want to do it in a way that's relevant. People are sponsoring game development contests. They are sponsoring tournaments. Toyota has done that. Toyota has actually launched products in our games where the car will appear in a game. People can race the car and it's a special car that you get for achieving a certain level in the game. There are really creative ways to get people exposure to these things.
* Q: In January, Warner Bros. announced that it was going to support Blu-ray, the high-definition DVD format. Since then, the rival HD DVD format has gone away. Microsoft supported HD DVD with an Xbox HD DVD attachment. What is your plan there? * A: Our plan continues to focus on high-definition experiences. Xbox 360 has a great ability to deliver those through the Xbox Live (online download) service. It's a great way to get the high-definition concept because it's right there. There's no additional media. There is nothing you need to purchase. If you look at the Blu-ray player market, you haven't seen the acceleration everybody expected (since the demise of HD DVD). It's not as much about whether all the content is in a Blu-ray format or a HD DVD format. You have to look at how fundamentally compelling the difference is between a progressive scan DVD player and the picture that it can produce and what you get on a high-definition player. The reality is there is some difference, but most people look at it and say, "I am not going to pay extra for that."
* Q: So no plans for Blu-ray in the next generation Xbox? * A: No. There is nothing to even talk about right now with regard to the next generation. That is so far out that there isn't anything to talk about.
* Q: Just the same, we are coming up on a few years now with the Xbox 360. Is there some point when you start to say that we need to start looking at its replacement? * A: There is no real projection on that. The last generation for the Xbox was a little short because we entered the market a little bit later in the cycle. I suspect this time the cycle will be a little bit longer for us. In terms of our actual thinking about that, we started thinking about the next generation before we finished creating the last one. It's a continuous process. We're always thinking about new ideas and new things. We don't have anything specific to talk about. There are so many things going on in the current generation that will keep us more than occupied for the foreseeable future.
